NAACP head: Voter ID fight akin to 60s battles

HOUSTON (AP) ? The head of the NAACP says the group's fight against conservative-backed voter ID laws that have been passed in several states is akin to the great civil rights battles of the 1960s.

Benjamin Todd Jealous, the CEO and president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, told delegates at the group's annual convention on Monday in Houston that these are Selma and Montgomery times. He was referring to historic civil rights confrontations in Alabama.

Many conservatives say voter identification laws are needed to stem voter fraud. Critics say voter fraud is rare and such laws are meant to suppress turnout among groups that tend to vote Democratic, including minorities.

Jealous says the rising tide of vote suppression must be overwhelmed by registration and mobilization.

Ivory Coast youth leader speaks from hiding

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) ? Charles Ble Goude will not say what country he is in. He calls on a masked number, after an appointment set up by a go-between in France.

The 40-year-old headed the Young Patriots, an ultranationalist youth group that is implicated in hundreds of killings in Ivory Coast, according to Human Rights Watch. He has been in hiding for the past 14 months, and after more than a year's silence and library's worth of articles speculating where he may be holed up, he is finally talking again ? albeit by phone.

It's unclear why he has chosen to break his silence now, except to give his version of events. It's a version in which he is the leader of a nonviolent struggle, not unlike Nelson Mandela, whose biography he says he's currently reading.

"I organized a struggle with bare hands in order to oppose the taking of power by the arms. Madam, is this something that should result in me going to the International Criminal Court?" he said in the telephone interview last week. "I have said it, and I repeat it ? If I am asked to go to the ICC, I'm ready to go to the ICC."

Ble Goude was the head of the Young Patriots, a pro-government youth organization which many describe as a militia. He was also the minister of youth under former President Laurent Gbagbo, who ruled Ivory Coast for a decade until his defeat at the polls in late 2010.

He refused to accept defeat and his government is accused of using "death squads" in an attempt to silence supporters of the democratically elected president, Alassane Ouattara. Ble Goude's Young Patriots played a decisive role in creating a climate of terror, erecting barricades and checkpoints where they attempted to identify "enemies of Ivory Coast," meaning supporters of Ouattara. Because Ouattara is from northern Ivory Coast, and one side of his family has roots in Burkina Faso, anyone having a northern name, as well as immigrants from neighboring nations, became targets.

Dozens of West African immigrants were killed at Young Patriot checkpoints, many of them by first being "necklaced" with a tire and set on fire.

Until Gbagbo was forced from power in April, Ble Goude held regular rallies where he used increasingly xenophobic rhetoric, which many believe incited his supporters to violence. He denies that he played a role in the killings that followed.

"Can you show me a single video, or a single audio, where I asked the youth of Ivory Coast to hurt foreigners?" he said during a call marred by a bad connection. "These are vulgar lies, that I deny. It's not true."

In a report on the post-election period, Human Rights Watch said that the violence against West African immigrants began in December, immediately after the country's election commission announced that Ouattara had won. However, the attacks intensified markedly in February, following a televised Feb. 25 speech by Ble Goude. In that speech, Ble Goude enjoined his supporters to erect checkpoints "and to check the comings and goings in your neighborhoods and denounce every foreign person who enters."

Both The Associated Press and the BBC reported the speech, and a transcript appears in Human Rights Watch's October 2011 report, as well as in the report of the United Nations Commission of Inquiry. A video clip is available on the website of Djibitv.com.

After that speech, Human Rights Watch documented the gruesome killings of at least 32 immigrants, 14 of whom were gruesomely slain, including by being set on fire. Witnesses said the aggressors made reference to Ble Goude's "order."

Ble Goude denies he ever made that speech, or any other that could have fanned the flames of hatred.

"What you are saying is totally removed from reality. I never asked the young people to put up checkpoints in order to identify the foreigners ? that's not true!" he said.

"The young people they put up checkpoints to see if the people living in their neighborhoods, or in different neighborhoods, are armed or not ... I never asked anybody to put up barricades so as to control the foreigners. This isn't true! It's your own invention."

During the 40-minute interview, Ble Goude at several points got frustrated and wanted to know why the AP is interested in speaking about the past, rather than the present. He pointed to the widespread human rights abuses that have been committed by Ouattara's regime.

Although his victory at the polls was recognized by all the major world powers, Ouattara was only able to assume power after French and United Nations airstrikes made it possible for Ouattara's fighters to penetrate the security cordon around Gbagbo's bunker. The ex-president was arrested on April 11, and has since been transferred to The Hague where he is awaiting trial.

Since then, Ouattara's security forces are accused of carrying out massacres in areas of the country known to have supported the former ruler.

"Under the eyes of human rights operators, people are being abducted in Ivory Coast. You know very well they are being tortured," said Ble Goude. "No one is daring to speak about this."

Ble Goude called back once during the interview to try to get a clearer line. The bad connection, which at times made it impossible to hear him, suggests that he is not near a major population center. There have been countless reported sightings of him, and speculation that he is everywhere from Ghana, Liberia and Togo ? countries where many Gbagbo supporters fled ? to Gambia and Angola, two countries that staunchly supported Gbagbo until the end.

He belied little about his current life, saying only that he "is not dying of hunger." He is also using his time to read, especially the biography of Mandela. He says it is not safe for him to return to Ivory Coast.

"A life in hiding is never normal. The situation that Ivory Coast is living through now is not normal. So I can't have a normal daily existence," he said. "I am reading a lot and I am praying a lot. ... This is a moment of reflection for me. A moment to look back a bit at everything that happened ... It's what I am doing right now."

Battling "the big suck": An empowerment makeover

I have a lot of conversations with my friend Paige about what we call the big suck. Its a short, not-so-sweet bit of shorthand that we use to refer to the idea that everyone eventually has an incredibly difficult time in their lives that can serve as a catalyst for self-improvement. Often you go through more than one during your incredibly turbulent teens and 20s. For Paige and I both, one big suck was a disastrous first semester of college spent at universities we ultimately transferred out of. Isolated in new places (her in New York City, me in Boone, NC), we made few friends and set up self-fulfilling prophecies of loneliness and depression. We each quickly returned home to Chattanooga, knowing a little bit more about self-reliance and a level of endurance usually reserved for Olympic long-distance runners. As Paige put it to me over a glass of wine the other night, Sometimes you have to realize no situation in your life is actually permanent. You have the power to change it. Thats really is one of the most important things a young person can learn.

It is also a lesson that seems to be largely forgotten in the current cultural consciousness. For many in the millennial generation, inundated with messages of self-esteem throughout their childhoods, confidence has come with intractability when it comes to personal growth. Change is hard for everyone, especially when you have been taught that whatever your particular personality, virtues or vices, you are great just the way you are. A lot of the mistakes Ive made have been rooted in low self-esteem in my teens and early 20s, and maybe its because my parents wouldnt let me watch The Care Bears when it was on in the late 80s. Instead, I picked up other examples to follow, one in particular that might seem a little antiquated or odd?Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. Alcotts tale follows four very different sisters, each with different flaws or burdens to overcome.? For example, Jo is rash and has a quick temper, while Amy can be conceited and frivolous. The novel follows their struggles to better manage their good and bad qualities as they grow up.

What I love about Little Women is the idea that you decide who you become and where that person takes you. You would never catch one of the March sisters quoting that popular Marilyn Monroe line, If you cant handle me at my worst, than you dont deserve me at my best. Monroes declaration, frequently bandied about on Facebook and Tumblr memes, is the anthem many young people who are so secure in who they are (even when who they are is actually insecure and unhappy) that they blame other people for their own tendency to be unreasonable, unlikeable or self-sabotaging. Instead of defending their faults to the death, the ladies in Little Women readily admit them, while also recognizing they have some really good qualities as well. Its just a matter of spending the energy you could use defending your bad side to help your best self take center stage.

For every breakup with someone who seemed like the one, for every terrible performance review at work, for every nuclear roommate meltdown that rends leases asunder, it will be over eventually. You can even decide the terms by which and when it ends. When you get dumped, you are the one who can view it as the other persons problem and passive-aggressively deride your ex- on Facebook, or you can try to pinpoint your contribution to the end, however small it may be. When you fail on a project at work, you are the one who decides whether you respond with complacency or change your behavior and methods.? When your roommate wont stop fussing at you to wash the dishes, you could pack up in the dead of night and leave an empty bedroom behind if you really wanted, or you could grab the dish soap and start scrubbing. Its all up to you.

Until you find yourself held hostage for 10 years in an underground bunker, its a cop out to say youre really trapped. If your lover doesnt curl your toes, rock the single lifestyle and watch whatever you want on TV.? If your job is intolerable, you can try to get transferred within the company, bake your supervisor some cookies, quit or go back to school. If enough living situations go wrong over the years, recognize you may be happier on your own, strap down your budget and spring for your own one-bedroom apartment. There is always an alternative option to the one you are living right now. It might not be an easy alternative, but its your choice to make. You dont have to wait for a parent or a boss or a significant other to give you permission to change it up. After college, you cant just wait for the next phase of your life to arrive right on schedule, like finals putting an end to an insufferable sociology class. Fewer and fewer people are taking the old formulaic path into adulthood?graduate in May, get married in June. As a culture, were getting a little better at making up our own rules. Thats great?because its up to you to usher in the future. Thats a little scary, and a lot of responsibility, but ultimately, its incredibly empowering and fulfilling.

This past spring was a big suck for me. I found many aspects of my previous job frustrating, my grandmother died, my apartment was burglarized twice in one month and I found myself unemployed the day after I returned from a vacation. There were moments of despair and plenty of whining to my boyfriend over bourbon gingers. But it wasnt as bad as hard times in years past. I knew it was a big suck, but it didnt always feel like one. By 25, Ive learned the quickest way to end a period of frustration and upset is not to stare in horror at the flames engulfing the room but to start looking for either an exit or a hose. Next time you go through a big suck, remember that this too shall pass. While its passing, honor that whatever is going on is stressful and awful and scary, but also focus on what about the situation can be altered. It wont always feel like you are making progress, but eventually youll look around and discover that not only has your life improved, but that you are the superhero rock star who made those changes happen.
