96% First Position

All Critics (50) | Top Critics (21) | Fresh (48) | Rotten (2)

A number of the performances are plain stunning - Aran and Joan, in particular, seem born to move - and in many ways watching the movie is like watching a sporting event; there are winners and losers and favorites to cheer on.

It's an intense journey, and Kargman captures it all, down to the dancers' bloodied and bruised feet.

Yes, it is possible to create a gripping documentary about the ballet world without resorting to "Black Swan" melodramatics.

Because its subjects are so driven and so talented, "First Position," which is about ballet, is more gripping than the norm.

It's in the quick audience-reaction shots of the young dancers' exultant parents and cringing private instructors that the movie finds its most nakedly human moments.

The film shows the grueling work it takes for young dancers like Zamora to look effortless on stage, and First Position shows teachers who range from supportive to borderline abusive.

Far from the dutiful progeny of "Dance Moms," these are individuals of uncommon skill, self-knowledge, maturity and drive. They're the real deal. And so is First Position.

All of the dollars and expertise that produced this summer's blockbusters could never produce a spectacle as wondrous as 11-year-old Aran Bell dancing his heart out.

Kargman ... brings a welcome empathy to this programmatic film that follows six hopefuls as they compete in something called the Youth America Grand Prix, which we're told is the most comprehensive ballet competition in the world.

The children are almost unearthly in their agility and elegance -- until they remove their shoes, and reveal their all-too-human abrasions and injuries.

It's a wealth of material at odds with a scant running time and shallow focus.

When it's over, you won't remember so much about who won and who lost. Instead, what remains is the expression on a young dancer's face, reflected in a mirror: showing the joy of being in love with what you do.

What we experience is the overwhelming thrill of the competition and the true agony of defeat.

It could very well compete for Best Documentary at next year's Academy Awards.

For someone (like me) who has never been to a ballet, the talent of these teens and tweens is a revelation.

It's 'Spartacus' en pointe.

Inspiring documentary about hardworking young dancers.

Almost loses its sense of good taste entirely in the final act, straining to build suspense and shape heroes. The bias hangs a little ugly in an otherwise passable, somewhat enlightening effort.

The cookie cutter format Kargman uses in presenting her subjects may be unoriginal but a safe way to introduce the filmmaker to her new audience.

Child ballet dancer and former journalist Bess Kargman brings a dancer's passion and insight to her directorial debut, illuminating the addictive magic and fierce demands of a ballet dancer's life.

Really, all of the dancers' evident passion for their art is, well, spellbinding.

These kids are proud of their tights.

Crossroads GPS Launches $2.5 Million Ad Campaign In Three Key Senate States

Karl Rove's Crossroads GPS is continuing its spending blitz, dropping another $2.5 million on ads in three states with competitive Senate races.

The new ads will air in Montana, Ohio and Virginia for 10 days on cable and broadcast TV. According to a press release from Crossroads GPS, the ads are "urging action to fight wasteful spending, government debt and ObamaCare."

"We're keeping the pressure on Washington to quit the massive spending and stop President Obama's disastrous health care takeover," said Nate Hodson, Crossroads GPS director of state and regional media relations. "These spots encourage citizens push for the practical solutions found in the New Majority Agenda."

Watch the ad running in Ohio:

Nearly half of the $2.5 million is going to Ohio, where Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) is trying to fight off a challenge from State Treasurer Josh Mandel (R). As The Huffington Post first reported on Monday, Crossroads GPS reserved $1.1 million worth of ad time in the state. That raises spending by outside conservative groups in the Ohio contest to $10.5 million, meaning they are spending more against Brown than any other senator or Senate candidate in the country. In contrast, progressive groups have spent around $2.5 million to aid Brown.

In addition to the Ohio ad buy, Crossroads GPS reserved a separate chunk of additional airtime in the same markets. The Brown campaign suspects that reservation is also for the Senate race, since the group bought separate airtime for presidential campaign ads.

In Virginia, former Democratic Gov. Tim Kaine is running against former Republican Sen. George Allen. In Montana, Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) is facing Rep. Denny Rehberg (R-Mont.).

Crossroads GPS also recently announced it had paid for $25 million worth of ads criticizing President Obama's record.

Crossroads GPS is classified as a 501(c)(4) organization under the U.S. tax code. With that classification, it does not have to disclose its donors but also can't primarily focus on political advocacy.

On Monday, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission, arguing that Crossroads GPS, Americans for Prosperity and the 60 Plus Association should not be allowed to keep their donors secret because the groups are essentially acting as political organizations.

California almond growers ready for harvest bounty ? photo gallery

California almond growers are preparing for another bin-buster crop. The almond industry is pleased with the prospect of meeting market demand, as growers work hard to get ready for the harvest and hoping to sustain prices in the $2 per pound range and shellers look to do their job more efficiently without building costly additions to their plants.

What to know before July 9 'Internet doomsday' arrives

2 hrs.

Internet users scanning their Twitter feeds or Facebook accounts Sunday might want to add one more quick click to check their computer for malware.

Thousands of people around the country whose computers were infected with the?malicious DNSChanger software more than a year ago faced the possibility of not being able to get online after midnight EDT.

At 12:01 a.m. EDT, the FBI planned to shut down the Internet servers set up as a temporary safety net to keep infected computers online for the past eight months. The court order the agency obtained to keep the servers running expired, and it was not renewed.

The problem began when international hackers ran an online advertising scam to take control of more than 570,000 infected computers around the world. When the FBI went in to take down the hackers late last year, agents realized that if they turned off the malicious servers being used to control the computers, all the victims would lose their Internet service.

In a highly unusual move, the FBI set up the safety net. The bureau brought in a private company to install two clean Internet servers to take over for the malicious servers so that people would not suddenly lose their Internet.

The FBI arranged for a private company to run a website ? http://www.dcwg.org ? as a place where computer users could go to see if their computer was infected by DNSChanger,?and find links to other computer security business sites where they could find fixes for the problem. (If you want a quick check of your computer's status, the FBI-authorized dns-ok.us site is fast ? no software is?required for the scan.)

From the onset, most victims didn't even know their computers were infected, although the malicious software probably has slowed their web surfing and disabled their antivirus software, making their machines more vulnerable to other problems.

Many computer users don't understand the complex machines they use every day to send email, shop and cruise for information. The cyberworld of viruses, malware, bank fraud and Internet scams is often distant and confusing, and warning messages may go unseen or unheeded.

Also, some people simply don't trust the government, and believe that federal authorities are only trying to spy on them or take over the Internet. Blogs and other Internet forums are riddled with postings warning of the government using the malware as a ploy to breach American citizens' computers. That's a charge the FBI and other cybersecurity experts familiar with the malware quickly denounce as ridiculous.

Still, the Internet is flooded with conspiracy theories:

"I think the FBI just wants everyone to go to that website to check our computers so they can check our computers as well. Just a way to steal data for their own research," one computer user said in a posting on the Internet.

Another observed: "Yet another ploy to get everyone freaked out ... remember Y2K."

There also is an underlying sense that this will be much ado about nothing, such as the approach of 2000. The transition to that year presented technical problems and fears that some computers would stop working because they were not set up for the date change. In the end there were very few problems.

Considering there are millions of Internet users across the country, several thousand isn't a big deal, unless you're one of them.

Rep. Jim Langevin, D-R.I., and co-founder of Congress' cybersecurity caucus, said computer uses have a responsibility to practice good sense and make sure their computers are not infected or being hijacked by criminals.

"These types of issues are only going to increase as our society relies more and more on the Internet, so it is a reminder that everyone can do their part," he said.

FBI officials have been tracking the number of computers they believe still may be infected by the malware. As of Wednesday, there were about 45,600 in the U.S. ? nearly 20,000 less than a week ago. Worldwide, the total is roughly 250,000 infected. The numbers have declined steadily, and recent efforts by Internet service providers may limit the problems on Monday.

Tom Grasso, an FBI supervisory special agent, said many Internet providers have plans to try to help their customers. Some may put technical solutions in place that will correct the server problem. It they do, the Internet will work, but the malware will remain on victims' computers and could pose future problems.

Other Internet providers are simply braced for the calls to their help lines.

By Monday, if you can't read this online, those customer support lines will be your only solution.
