Cross Promotion | Making Direct Response Marketing Work For You

Over 25 years ago, I read a book by Jeff Slutsky called ?Streetfighting: Low-cost advertising/promotion strategies for your small business.? This book not only helped me get a job, it also taught me a lot about retail marketing as I started working in retail. When I became a store manager, I used the book as my guide to grow my store into one of the top stores in our chain.

One of the things that Jeff (yes, after 20-some years I finally got to meet him) wrote about is cross promotion.

This is a simple concept that says that I?ll hand out your business coupons in my business if you hand out my coupons in your business. As a good marketer you would offer to print both sets of coupons (in the old days we printed them on our dot-matrix printer and then took it down to the copy shop). This cross-promotion effort worked very well for the photo processing store I was managing so many years ago. The great thing about this is that not many businesses today are using this technique, and if they are, they are not doing it properly.

?But, Phil, I?m not a retail business. What can I do?? Well, my friend, you can do JV?s or Joint Ventures in its basic sense. You can send out a letter to your customer base recommending a business and maybe telling them you got them, say, a special discount. The other business does the same for your business.

How much does this marketing cost? A ream or two of paper and some time if you?re a retail business; if you?re not, add in some envelopes and stamps. Oh by the way, mail the letters, don?t email them.

When fall arrives I think of family.?This time of year has so many great memories ? from pumpkin carving, Husker game watching, caramel apple making to costume building ? for me and I always look forward to creating new ones with my husband and our three kids (photographed above).

But what if you are a kid without a family?

What if ? instead of being excited and secure in your anticipation of fall traditions ? you are hoping for a parent, a sibling, or a family?

Right now, more than 1,000 Nebraska children in the foster care system have those concerns. They are waiting for that family and those traditions.

The Omaha Great Pumpkin Tree family festival shines awareness on those children. On Oct. 27, people will gather at Village Pointe Shopping Center for a family festival with activities such as pumpkin carving. At 7 p.m., all of those carved pumpkins will be on display at a tree lighting ceremony that?ll represent the 1,033 Nebraska children waiting for a family.

When I tell folks that my husband and I are taking classes to become eligible to adopt from foster care, the reactions are varied. Some people are very excited, some are vaguely congratulatory, and some are just plain skeptical. Why wouldn?t they be skeptical? Nebraska has one of the largest percentages in the nation of children entering foster care each year. I would bet that we have a very small percentage of people who have real knowledge of the children or the process. I certainly didn?t.

In our journey, we were glad to learn that we would be partnering with knowledgeable people to become experts on how to integrate a child experiencing grief and loss into our family. We are working with our caseworker as a team to discover what type of child would be a great match for our family based on our strengths and the child?s needs. The goal is always to do what is in the best interest of the child.

Adoption is a fantastic way to make a difference and is probably one of the best gifts you could ever give a child or yourself ? but it?s not the only way.

Fostering children, providing a break for full-time foster parents by becoming a respite foster parent, educating yourself and sharing with others are all paths that lead to impacting the lives of Nebraska?s children in foster care. And just in case you think you need to be the perfect parents to help foster children, let me assure you, none of us are perfect, and that is perfectly okay.

Think about the children in your life. They are funny, messy, goofy, smart, frustrating, loud, shy, surprising, exasperating, adorable, loving and beautiful. They are unique. The children in foster care are just as amazingly diverse. And they need us.

As with Asbestos , Industry Execs Try to ... - Mesothelioma Blog

Recently opinion journalist, Nicholas D. Kristof, wrote an op-ed column for The New York Times shining a light on how big industry works hard to keep the truth about carcinogens from being known to the general public.? Way back in the 1930?s they did it in regards to the dangers of asbestos, denying and shedding doubt that asbestos causes mesothelioma, a fatal form of aggressive cancer that is now killing hundreds of thousands of people every year.

Not much has changed in terms of the tactics.? The new carcinogens causing the chemical industry to use their delay and derail tactics are formaldehyde and Styrene.? The industry is now trying to suppress? scientific consensus that clearly shows that formaldehyde, a chemical found in many homes unbeknownst to most occupants, causes cancer and perhaps leukemia.

They are using big money and lobbying techniques to delay publication of the dangers of both formaldehyde and Syrene in the Report on Carcinogens, ?a 500-page consensus document published every two years by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).?? As Kristof says, ?If that sounds like shooting the messenger, well, it is.?

Formaldehyde is a colorless, flammable, strong-smelling chemical that is used in many building materials and household products. The NIH states:

• Formaldehyde has been classified as a known human carcinogen (cancer-causing substance) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer and as a probable human carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

• Research studies of workers exposed to formaldehyde have suggested an association between formaldehyde exposure and several cancers, including nasopharyngeal cancer and leukemia.

As for Styrene, a synthetic chemical used in many plastics, rubber and resins, the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) states:

?About 90,000 workers, including those who make boats, tubs, and showers, are potentially exposed to styrene. Health effects from exposure to styrene may involve the central nervous system and include complaints of headache, fatigue, dizziness, confusion, drowsiness, malaise, difficulty in concentrating, and a feeling of intoxication.?

Despite overwhelming scientific evidence, the chemical industry is trying to cast doubt on the fact that both of these chemicals can cause serious illness ? just like industry executives did when it became known that asbestos was killing workers and their families.

We must hope that something has been learned by those both inside and outside the industry that prevents hiding information from the public just for big business profit when it could save lives.

Legal Battle Over Warhol's Banana Art | LegalZoom Blog

Who owns the rights to the Andy Warhol banana on the cover of the the Velvet Underground?s 1967 album The Velvet Underground & Nico? That is the subject of a lawsuit filed by the rock band against The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts earlier this year.

Back in 2009, the Foundation accused the band of copyright infringement for its use of the image. The band responded that the image was a band trademark and filed a new suit in January 2012 when the Foundation licensed of some of Warhol?s works, including the famous banana artwork, to Incase for iPhone covers.

Recently U.S. District Court Judge Alison Nathan dismissed the copyright claim but ruled that the trademark claims in the lawsuit may continue.

In its lawsuit, the band at first maintained that the banana was in the public domain, but then amended the complaint to allege that the Foundation didn?t own the copyright; when the Foundation gave the band a ?covenant not to sue for copyright infringement,? the Foundation filed a motion to dismiss that part of the lawsuit.

Judge Nathan agreed that the covenant effectively ended any controversy over the copyright and dismissed the claim; a federal court must have a live controversy before it in order to rule on the issue.

The trademark claims in the case survived, however, and unless a settlement is reached, will eventually be ruled upon.

The band maintains that because the banana cover has become so closely linked with the Velvet Underground ?that members of the public, particularly those who listen to rock music, immediately recognize the banana design as the symbol of The Velvet Underground.? The argument goes that this could create confusion that products featuring the banana art are somehow associated with or endorsed by the band.

The case has an especially interesting background since Warhol was actually the band?s manager and is listed as the producer of the album in question.

There were plenty of famous faces at last night?s Skin Cancer Foundation Gala held at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Ralph Lauren?s daughter?Dylan Lauren (of Dylan?s Candy Bar), model and mogul Brooke Shields, and?New York Housewives?Aviva Drescher and Alex McCord were among the celebs present.

The ladies were lovely at the cocktail-dress gala. Dylan sported an all-silk look with amethyst top and pants, Brooke went with a short red number and Aviva and Alex were cocktail all the way in shimmering dresses?one black, one gold. The important thing is that these celebs stepped out for skin cancer, one of the leading causes of death in this country.

Day 9: Organize Tall and Skinny Kitchen Cabinets : Pancakes and ...

We have tall and skinny cabinets on either side of our oven. When we had the cabinets installed, the installers asked me how I wanted the shelves positioned. I told them to space them evenly because I had no idea what I would store inside. Eventually, I used the one on the right to store aluminum foil, cling wrap, and gallon size plastic bags.

About week ago, as I was getting some foil to wrap up leftovers, I took a look at the cabinets and realized I had a lot of dead space causing unnecessary mess. It took me brainstorming different gizmos at The Container Store, Target, and other home improvement stores to realize the obvious: I could lower the shelves and store short things on the bottom and tall things on top. You won?t believe the contraptions and whirly-gigs I imagined for those cabinets prior to this revelation.

This is what I had in the right cabinet. At some point in the last seven years, I decided to store more than foil and cling wrap. I tossed the Target bags (?), but kept the mandoline, silpats, and 397 bamboo skewers.

You can see where I?m going here. I thought this job would be straight forward, but the shelves are attached with these plastic alligator-like clips you have to press to release. I had to press both clips on one side and then thwack the shelf up and loose on that same side. That?s fine (not really, it sucked), but these cabinets are deep and I have the arm span of a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Getting the shelves out involved tippy-toes on a step ladder, a butter knife, and the equivalent of giving a cabinet the Heimlich.

It was worth the effort, thank goodness.

I ended up devoting most of the cabinet to food storage. That big stack of paper bags has been in our laundry room since last year. I bought a small case of them at Sam?s Club for $6 and use them as snack bags for soccer and baseball games, school parties, etc. The top shelf holds my mandoline and bamboo skewers. They?re sharp, somewhat dangerous, and I feel better with them out of the way. I stole a shelf from the left cabinet to make that happen.

The left cabinet became a catch-all since I never established its purpose. It held appliance manuals and instructions (I knew where to put those!),? random DIY supplies (I knew where to put them, too!), and a few miscellaneous items, like kitchen mitts. I tossed the mitts in a drawer I will later organize.

Now that I reduced the cabinet to two shelves, I was able to store my small platters on the bottom shelf (I use those often) and my muffin pans and spice grinder on the top shelf (I use those rarely).

I so happy with the way it turned out.
