Ways To Reduce Childhood Obesity | Children's Health and Fitness

From The Colombian?..

Many children and teenagers are becoming obese. The unhealthy foods eaten that are passed as snacks, lunch and dinner are a part of weight gain.

Schools could help make children less obese by simply changing the lunch menu and items in the vending machines. Snacks that are brought from home should be limited, to some extent. Many parents want to make their children happy by buying them all the foods they would like to eat. Please know that obesity is a worldwide issue that can be fatal and is not worth the risk. Fun snacks should not be taken away; a snack should be allowed once a day or week.

More than one-fourth of all obese people in America are children. Daily exercise should become a habit and healthy snacks such as apples should replace greasy chips, pizza, fries and many more.

Healthy children are happy children; don?t let your child become a part of this chain.

The Key To A Better Life Through Personal Development

This article has been viewed 9 times.

Are you having trouble meeting someone that you can love and call your own? Explore your options on the Internet. These days, 40 percent of couples meet via the Internet. Perhaps, this would work for you as well. Both websites have positives and negatives.

You should know the values that bear importance to you prior to planning a personal development program. Trying to change yourself in ways that are not in line with your values, is not a good idea. Instead, spend your time and energy on areas in your life you wish to develop that also synchronize with your personal values. This is the best way to make long-term changes.

Discipline is one of the cornerstones of a successful personal development plan. You should strive to control your temptations and increase your self control. You can conquer many desires such as lust, drunkenness, or greed. If you can successfully control yourself, you are on the right path to lead a happy and healthy life.

Reading books on the subject of personal development or self-improvement is good for you. The best of these types of books can truly give you new advice and ideas that work for improving your specific life situations and challenges. It is important, however, that you choose a book that has received good reviews. There is no policing on the writers of personal development books, and some of them are sorely lacking in credibility.

Having a good attitude will empower your growth as an individual. A negative attitude will hold you back and even send you down the wrong path. It?s better to remain optimistic, and to remember that this attitude will make it easier for you to successfully attain your goals in life.

If you find that you are constantly having difficulty meeting your goals, take a step back to evaluate what?s going on. Check online and find others whom share similar goals with you and find out what they are doing compared to what you?re doing. You also might find that your goals are indeed not realistic, or that some other critical resource is needed before your goal can be realized.

A good attitude is essential to personal growth. A negative attitude will thwart your attempts at taking your life in a good direction. Staying positive and acting with a good attitude can help you attain your goals.

You should be humble in your everyday interactions. Learn from situations you encounter every day, and make sure that you recognize what you cannot change about circumstances in your life. A touch of modesty makes it much easier to understand your own limitations. The wisdom you have learned from the past will help you make better decisions, with better outcomes, in the future!

Exercise is not only for people wanting to lose weight. There are countless physical benefits to exercising. It helps stimulate your body so that you can create chemicals that make you calmer and happier.

Taking occasional risks, on a small level, can help you lead a happier life! Many do not want to risk feeling like a failure, or feeling rejected, so they are often stuck in comfort zone that leaves them feeling unfulfilled. It takes bravery to take risks, and bravery can be vital in building yourself the kind of life you really want.

Exercising is not only a way to lose weight. There are many other benefits from regular exercise. It stimulates different areas of your body into producing hormones that make us happier and calmer.

Place your personal central principles into practice. Everyone has values and beliefs in which they hold dear. Following these beliefs will help your sense of self-esteem. It gives your life meaning and a solid structure to build around. Doing this will help you develop consistency, which is a good trait to have.

Humility is key. In the big picture, we are simply bits of dust floating in the universe. Life is a learning process and no one person knows everything. Being open to new experiences provides opportunities to learn. You will be able to learn amazing things from each person you encounter if you encounter them in an open-minded fashion.

Think of yourself as a person instead of a body. Wearing the latest styles or looking like a movie star does not make a real difference. The person that you are inside will overshadow what you look like in your life. You should work on becoming a better person on the inside rather than worrying about how to improve your outer appearance.

Remembering to listen is as important as speaking your mind. If you are pursuing personal development goals, this is especially true for you! When you are talking to yourself, be sure to listen carefully. If you don?t, you will not know what you need, nor will you improve yourself.

Don?t use shopping as a comfort technique. Instead of spending money, find a hobby. Doing something more productive will help keep money in your pocket and help your stress level.

One approach to personal development is to view yourself as one who has not yet learned all there is to know. When you realize your place in the universe, you realize that you have a lot to learn. When you know this deep inside, you?ll have a craving for all of that knowledge and experience that you lack.

You have hopefully found a few new tips on personal development in this article. Of course, the more personal improvement you engage in, the more you will want to improve. No matter your age, personal development should be something we all strive towards

PFT: Hasselbeck, Locker alternating reps at camp

Casey Hampton, Alameda Ta'ammuAP

When Pittsburgh opened last season by taking a one-sided beatdown in Baltimore, Warren Sapp proclaimed that the Steelers were ?old, slow and it?s over.? Casey Hampton is, at age 35, the second-oldest Steeler. And at well over 300 pounds and coming off a torn ACL, he may be the slowest Steeler as well. But he insists that it?s not over.

?They?ve been saying that for how long?? Hampton said, via the Associated Press. ?They?ve been saying, ?You?re getting old,? and all that for years, and year in and year out we do our thing. So I don?t see it being any different this year.?

The Steelers aren?t as old as they used to be, with aging veterans James Farrior, Aaron Smith, Chris Hoke and Hines Ward retiring this offseason. Hampton said the Steelers have the right players in place to replace those longtime teammates.

?No question about it, when you?ve been around those guys 10-plus years, it?s definitely different,? Hampton said. ?But that?s part of it. You see guys come and go all the time. Those are definitely special guys, but I think those guys will fill in and do their best to make up for it.?

Hampton is currently on the Physically Unable to Perform list, but he says he?ll be ready to go when he needs to go.

?I don?t have no problem with being on it as long as I need to be,? Hampton said. ?I just want to get it right and be right when I?m out there. I don?t want to be out there hobbling messing around; I wanna be out there ready to go.?

And Hampton thinks the Steelers are ready to go to the postseason again, regardless of anyone saying he?s old and slow.

Pro Ana Nation - Looking forward to the week ahead.

The weekends are ALWAYS bad. I expect it now. Drinking always throws me off track. I just eat and socialize and forget everything when I drink. Went out with the family on Friday, ate and drank like a mofo then Saturday we had a family and friend barbeque type thing at our place and drank and ate and played board games. It was fun. But the junk food was everywhere. And one of my friends recently came back from America and brought me a huuuge packet of Skittles (since they don't sell them in my country anymore) and I went mad on those :/
But today has been good. Went to the mall with my mom and didn't eat breakfast even though she did. Didn't even feel tempted. Stuck to my peppermint tea with some honey for sweetener. Today my calorie intake is at 500. I had a large white bread roll with some low fat cream cheese, some feta, a slice of tomato and some avo. I'll be snacking on plain lettuce if i absolutely must. And no more than 5 Skittles (they're so damn addictive). And the whole week we are going to gym every single day. Today my sister and I have a spinning class in the evening. Then tomorrow I'm going to be do my general workout at the gym. Wednesday I'll work out at home and then Thursday we have spinning again. Friday is a general workout and then hopefully the weekend I won't be so terrible. My rents are going away for the weekend so it'll just be my sister and I at home and she loves to order pizza and unhealthy takeout whenever we're home alone but I'll resist. At least try!
I hope the week ahead is excellent for us all. Stay strong and get skinny.
Thinking thin!

Romney in Israel: ?I love this country?

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney pledged not to directly criticize President Obama during his overseas trip ? yet in a keynote foreign policy speech today he delivered tough, although implicit, words about Obama?s handling of Israel.

Delivering his remarks against the backdrop of Jerusalem?s Old City walls, Romney drew contrasts with Obama on a range of issues.

Where Obama had told Jewish leaders in 2009 that he sought to put ?daylight? between the U.S. and Israel, Romney said today, ?you can?t get much closer to the ideals and convictions of my own country than you do in Israel.?

Where Obama has had a contentious relationship with the Israeli prime minister, Romney referred to ?my friend Benjamin Netanyahu.?

Where Obama administration officials and campaign surrogates have warned Israel against striking Iran?s nuclear facilities, Romney pledged American support: ?We recognize Israel?s right to defend itself, and that it is right for America to stand with you.?

In recent days, the Obama administration has come under fire for refusing to recognize Jerusalem as Israel?s capital. Romney said near the top of his speech, ?It is a deeply moving experience to be in Jerusalem, the capital of Israel.?

Yet the strongest criticism of the Obama administration was reserved for Romney?s concluding words, where he appeared to rebuke Obama?s oft-repeated claim that he has been a strong ally of Israel owing to his support for military assistance.

?I believe that the enduring alliance between the State of Israel and the United States of America is more than a strategic alliance: it is a force for good in the world,? Romney said. ?America?s support of Israel should make every American proud. We should not allow the inevitable complexities of modern geopolitics to obscure fundamental touchstones. No country or organization or individual should ever doubt this basic truth: A free and strong America will always stand with a free and strong Israel.?

?And standing by Israel does not mean with military and intelligence cooperation alone,? he said.

Implicitly criticizing the Obama administration?s many public clashes with and condemnations of Israel, Romney concluded: ?We cannot stand silent as those who seek to undermine Israel, voice their criticisms.? And we certainly should not join in that criticism. Diplomatic distance in public between our nations emboldens Israel?s adversaries.?

Understanding your opponents business can also be crucial, even if you know your own like the back of one's hand. Although win-win is a perfect outcome, the other side continues to be your opponent.

If you can stroll away from this, if nothing is working out, this may be a choice you'll have to make. When you believe about negotiators, they can intuitively sense how individuals believe psychologically. This is a necessary gift. Be leaving you've a powerful position, or which you are confident, is something which will come out during negotiations. Having the ability to hide these feelings, particularly throughout negotiations, is something you have to learn how you can do. Walking away means you aren't willing to take less than you would like. In the event you don't, taking much less is something you're prepared to accept. In many cases, negotiators will not agree for your terms. This really is something that occurs each day. Take these days for example as you are studying something new concerning website iklan, and also you can do a partial campaign which would really be a test campaign. When you truly think about it, that is just great typical sense business, but we think most people don't method issues like that.

You have to select the approach that functions best for you personally and figure out how you can make it successful. You need to be extremely skilled at negotiating if you wish to be successful at win-no win strategy. Or, you'll require to exert a particular type of ruthlessness which might not usually be possible. You'll be a lot much better served having a win-win strategy in the event you can put your self into the other side's position. Understanding their scenario and their point of view can help you to create the win-win outcome.

Discover to leave all your emotions and related issues outdoors the negotiating space. Skilled negotiators are going to try to play against your individual feels, so prepared yourself for that. One instance of this might be using some real or imagined personality quirk to distract you. You can't let this upset you so keep your focus on every thing that's actually present. Certainly one of the methods that a skilled negotiator will play upon your emotions is by doing things you highly and extremely disapprove of. So do not let yourself get sucked into taking these words or actions personally; just ignore them as very best you can.

When it comes to genuine business and negotiating skills, the edge will fall towards the person who has worked tougher. This really is quite true simply because you will need to sacrifice so you can learn the very best negotiation abilities possible. Kalyn's Kitchen: Slow Cooker Recipe for Spicy Vegetarian Pinto ...

I think it was a recipe I came across for swiss chard sauteed with cumin (plus an abundance of swiss chard in the garden) that inspired me to create this slow cooker recipe for a spicy vegetarian mixture of pinto beans, swiss chard, spices, and salsa that's stuffed into burritos.? This is definitely one of those recipes that produces a very unphotogenic mixture when it comes out of the slow cooker, but if you like swiss chard and pinto beans, please don't let that keep you from making this.? I loved the combination of flavors with the pintos and swiss chard, and other than chopping the swiss chard a little smaller next time, this was a lucky recipe experiment where I wouldn't change a thing!
Definitely these burritos are a perfect Meatless Monday main dish, and if you skip the cheese or use some type of vegan cheese, this recipe could be easily be made vegan. The recipe makes quite a bit, and I froze the extra filling for an easy dinner another time.? (You can find more meatless recipes by using the label Meatless Monday or checking Vegetarian Recipes in the recipe index, and I'm also doing a meatless slow cooker recipe each Monday on Slow Cooker from Scratch.? For more Meatless Monday ideas from other bloggers, check Meatless Monday at BlogHer, where I write a weekly post spotlighting one of the fabulous meatless recipe ideas I find around the web.)
I have a good post about cooking dried beans in a slow cooker, and soaking is optional, but I did soak these beans overnight to be sure they wouldn't take too long for such a large amount of beans.

The next day drain the beans, add 6 cups fresh water, ground cumin, garlic powder, and a chopped onion.

Cook the beans on high until they are quite soft.? For me this was a little over 4 hours, but the age of the beans will affect how long they take to cook.? When the beans are done, drain them, saving 1/4 of the cooking water.

Stir in the salsa and hot sauce into the beans and continue to cook while you chop and wash the chard.

Cut off chard stems, stack up the leaves, and slice then chop the chard leaves until you have 6-8 cups of chopped chard leaves.? (If you're using garden chard, wash it in a salad spinner after it's chopped.? Next time I would chop it a bit more than shown in this photo.

Add the chard to the slow cooker, pressing down to get it all in if needed, cover the cooker and continue to cook and let the chard wilt.)

When the chard has all wilted down (about 30-45 minutes) stir to combine, cover and cook about another hour on high.

Here's the unphotogenic mixture I warned you about after the beans and chard have all cooked together.? If the mixture seems dry at this point, add the 1/4 cup of cooking water you saved.

I can't seem to find large burrito sized tortillas that are low carb, so I use these soft taco sized ones and consider two small burritos to be a serving.

You'll need about some thinly sliced green onion and grated mozzarella blend to make the finished burritos.

Warm the tortilla in the microwave for a few seconds, then spread on about 1/3 cup of the filling mixture, a sprinkle of cheese, and some green onions.

Fold up the bottom to make the end of the burrito, then fold the sides in and serve, with extra hot sauce if desired.

Slow Cooker Spicy Vegetarian Pinto Bean and Chard Burritos
(Makes about 12 small burritos; can be cut in half but the mixture freezes well.? Recipe created by Kalyn.)

Ingredients:
1 lb. dry pinto beans (2 heaping cups)
6 cups water
1 chopped onion
1 T ground cumin
1 T garlic powder
1 1/2 cup salsa (I used Pace Picante Sauce medium)
1 tsp. salt
2-4 T Chululu hot sauce (or other hot sauce of your choice; hot sauce is optional but I liked the spiciness of this.)
6-8 cups chopped swiss chard leaves
1 pkg. whole wheat or low carb flour tortillas (I used soft taco size which made small burritos)
low-fat grated mozzarella blend cheese (for making finished burritos; I used about 2 T per burrito)
thinly sliced green onions (for making finished burritos; I used about 1 T per burrito)

Instructions:

I recommend pre-soaking the beans for best results, but if you forget to soak them, add 1-2 hours more time for cooking the beans.? I used a Crock-Pot 5-Quart Smart-Pot Slow Cooker for this recipe so I could fit a generous amount of chard into the slow cooker.)

Soak beans overnight in cold water to cover by several inches.? (I just soaked them in the crockery part of the slow cooker.)? The next day, drain beans, then add them back to the slow cooker with 6 cups water, onion, ground cumin, and garlic powder.? Cook on high until beans are quite soft.? (I cooked my soaked beans for a little over 4 hours to get them as soft as I preferred.? Unsoaked beans or beans that aren't fresh may take a couple hours longer for this step.)

When the beans are soft, drain them and return to the slow cooker, saving 1/4 cup of the bean cooking water.? Add the salsa, salt, and hot sauce (if using) and let beans continue to cook on high while you chop and wash the swiss chard.? Cut off chard stems, stack up some chard leaves, and then slice and chop the leaves until you have 6-8 cups of chopped leaves.? If you're using garden chard, wash with a salad spinner.

Put the chopped chard leaves in the slow cooker, pressing down to get them all in if needed.? Cover the slow cooker and continue to cook on high to wilt the leaves.? When they're all wilted (about 30-45 minutes) stir to combine and then continue to cook the beans and chard leaves about an hour longer, or until the chard leaves are very soft and beans are nearly falling apart.? Check to see if the mixture seems dry and add the saved cooking water if needed.

Instructions for Assembling Burritos:

Thinly slice enough green onions for the number of burritos you're making.? Have grated low-fat mozzarella blend cheese ready.? Heat a tortilla in the microwave for a few minutes (or for making a lot of burritos at once, I like to wrap them in a double layer of aluminum foil and heat in the oven for about 10-15 minutes.)? Lay the softened burrito on a plate or cutting board, add about 1/3 cup of the bean/chard filling mixture, spreading it in a line from the outside edge of the tortilla to about 2/3 of the way down (leaving about 1/3 of the end to fold up to hold the mixture inside.)? Top with about 2 T grated cheese and 1 T thinly sliced green onions (plus extra hot sauce if desired.)? Fold up the end of the burrito, then fold in the sides over the end so you have one open end and one end that's closed to keep the filling in.? Serve hot.

The burrito mixture and extra tortillas will freeze well if you don't eat this all right away.

South Beach Suggestions:

Lots of people don't realize that low-glycemic dried beans are permitted for all phase of the South Beach Diet.? Of course with the tortillas, this recipe would be Phase 2 or 3 for South Beach Dieters, and it's also important to choose whole wheat or low-carb tortillas and use low-fat cheese.
Nutritional Information?
I chose the South Beach Diet to manage my weight partly so I wouldn't have to count calories, carbs, points, or fat grams, but if you want nutritional information for a recipe, I recommend entering the recipe into Calorie Count, which will calculate it for you.

(AP) ? The blindingly bright hot pink carpet at the Teen Choice Awards was full of rising fashion stars unafraid to break the rules in equally colorful styles.

Ponytailed Teen Choice co-host Demi Lovato wore a flashy yellow-and-silver sequined minidress with long feathers to the Sunday ceremony.

"Well, I chose it because I'm just really, I'm in a really fun mood, and I wanted to 'wow' people when I stepped out on the carpet," smiled Lovato. "And I don't know, the host has to wear something special, it's the Teen Choice Awards."

New pop star Carly Rae Jepsen wore a beige blazer paired with a matching miniskirt and dark green printed palm trees accompanied by a black clutch and chunky black Aldo platforms. "It just felt kind of suited for Teen Choice. The surf boards. Why not?" said Jepsen.

Zoe Saldana wore a balloon-hem printed dress by Jonathan Saunders, and Zooey Deschanel chose a cheerful cobalt-blue cocktail dress by Monique Lhuillier.

The youngest Kardashian sisters, Kendal and Kylie Jenner, opted for dark dresses.

"We wanted to be different," said Kendall Jenner. Added Kylie: "I picked this dress, just because I really liked it, and then to coordinate, she picked a dark one."

Miranda Cosgrove of "iCarly" wore a short silver metallic sequined dress with subtle jewelry, while Victoria Justice wore a long animal-print dress with a bejeweled black belt, sleek straight hair and beige heels.

"Vampire Diaries" fashionista Nina Dobrev wore a teal strapless J. Mendel dress, gold strappy heels and a soft Grecian braid. "The Teen Choice Awards are all about having fun and being young," she said. "Just playing around and feeling liberated, I guess."

Modular Kitchens- Comfortable Kitchens

Just imagine what our modern society is made of? It is made of working couples who spend their most of the time in meetings and trips abroad. They eat corn flakes and bread toasts in breakfast and most of the time have their dinners in restaurants. They scarcely have homemade food during weekdays and if they have it, it is their maid who prepares it. Then why they still go for expensive modular kitchen? Do they really need an expensive room for cooking? Actually, these are the people who need a modern or modular kitchen the most. In modern societies kitchen is no more just a room for cooking.

A regular house wife believes it a duty of hers to prepare meals for her family and all she wants from her kitchen is that it should be comfortable for her. Even if it is not that comfortable she still will cook food as religiously as she always does. But if you are a working woman who is busy whole week and wants to spend the weekend with your family by cooking delicious food and eating it with whole family, it needs to be a comfortable place for you. If you will find cooking a troublesome experience because you do not get enough space for yourself while cooking or the utensils are not at proper distance from your hands or the cabinets are out of your reach or it is uncomfortable in other ways, you will definitely start dreading with cooking.

Modular kitchen by utilizing the space intelligently gives you an optimum work station. It includes variety of intelligent cabinets, wash basin, chimney, built in waste baskets etc that make it comfortable for you. These modular kitchens are either designed on Taylorist principles or have ergonomic designs. Taylorist kitchens are based on management principles while the ergonomic kitchens are user centric kitchen. These types of kitchens are designed to minimize the pressure on human body at work by adjusting the work-top heights and storage chutes. Both of these types make the kitchen spacious and comfortable. To understand the difference of these two types of kitchens, buy exclusive images of ergonomic and Taylorist kitchens introduced by different modular kitchen brands.

Basically modular kitchens are designed in four ways-

U shaped modular kitchen- This type of kitchen looks very beautiful and modern. This type of kitchen is designed for one cook. In a U shaped kitchen the cabinets are designed in a way that the cook finds it comfortable to pick the things out from them during cooking and it also keeps the onlookers outside till the dinner is cooked. But one of the shortcomings of this type of kitchen is that it requires a big space. You can buy images of different U shaped kitchen to understand what exactly it looks like.

L shaped modular kitchen- This kitchen is designed in L shape. At one side of this kitchen are designed the sink and cabinets for crockery, utensils, etc. and the other hand of the L shaped slab has the stove, the chimney and the storage cabinets for food products. It is ideal for both the smaller and for the larger kitchens.

Parallel modular kitchen- It is the best type of modular kitchens for smaller houses. It utilizes the space in best way. The kitchen slab, stove, washbasin are designed along with a wall and cabinets are adjusted with the slab. It is also called one walled kitchen.

Island modular kitchen- This kitchen is more like a U shaped kitchen but there is an additional counter in the middle of the kitchen which can make cooking a pleasing and a relaxing experience. Buy images of Island modular kitchen to understand how it is different from other types of kitchens.

The shifting dance of love, relationships & desire ? Take This Waltz ...

It?s been a while since I?ve been to the movies, so when I found myself with some free time on Sunday, I veered away from summer action hero blockbusters, drawn to something more quiet, intimate and moving. And that was Sarah Polley?s film Take This Waltz.

Beautifully written (Polley wrote and directed), shot and acted, Take This Waltz is an up close and personal look at the shifts of love, relationships and desire. Margot (Michelle Williams) meets Daniel (Luke Kirby) during a work-related trip and the connection is immediate. But Margot is married to Lou (Seth Rogen). Turns out, Daniel lives across the street. Margot and Lou have a close, playful relationship and Margot loves him and his family, in particular her sister-in-law Geraldine and her niece Tony. But Margot is feeling like there?s something missing. And Margot and Daniel can?t stop thinking about each other.

What struck me first about this film was the quality of the light and colour:? golden light and gorgeous primaries and secondaries, both in the set and costumes, as well as a lovely retro feel ? the old century home apartments, the vintage dresses, the Scrambler amusement park ride in a disco setting. But above all, the view we get is extremely intimate, from the close-ups where we see emotions play to conversations (one in a women?s shower room) to scenes of desire expressed (with words and with bodies).

Polley has a lovely cast: Williams? Margot is vulnerable, searching and sensuous, Rogen gives a sweet, playful and hesitant feel to Lou, while Kirby?s Daniel is dreamy, puck-ish and sexy, and Silverman?s Geraldine is tough on the outside, but extremely fragile with a great irreverent sense of humour. And Lost Girl and Republic of Doyle fans will recognize Graham Abbey, who plays Geraldine?s lovely, supportive husband James.

Thematically, Take This Waltz made me think about the nature of relationships ? and how no matter how much you may love someone and what to grow old with them, relationships are organic ? and therefore changing ? things. At what point does the nature of a relationship outside of marriage become cheating? The age-old question of what makes for love and desire ? and how one tells them apart ? is turned over and around. And, as Geraldine says: ?Life has a gap in it? it just does. You don?t go crazy trying to fill it.? Of course, the question then becomes where is the gap located? In the relationship, in our loved one or in ourselves?

Here?s the trailer. Go see this.

Mouse with human immune system may revolutionize HIV vaccine research

ScienceDaily (July 18, 2012) ? One of the challenges to HIV vaccine development has been the lack of an animal model that accurately reflects the human immune response to the virus and how the virus evolves to evade that response. In the July 18 issue of Science Translational Medicine, researchers from the Ragon Institute of Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), MIT and Harvard report that a model created by transplanting elements of the human immune system into an immunodeficient mouse addresses these key issues and has the potential to reduce significantly the time and costs required to test candidate vaccines.

"Our study showed not only that these humanized mice mount human immune responses against HIV but also that the ability of HIV to evade these responses by mutating viral proteins targeted by CD8 'killer' T cells is accurately reflected in these mice," says Todd Allen, PhD, senior author of the report. "For the first time we have an animal model that accurately reproduces critical host-pathogen interactions, a model that will help facilitate the development an effective vaccine for HIV." Recent studies by Allen's team and others have revealed that immune control of HIV is significantly limited by the ability of the virus to evade immune responses by rapidly mutating.

The traditional animal model for HIV research is the rhesus monkey, which can be infected with the related simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV). But differences in viral sequences between SIV and HIV, along with differences between the human and monkey immune systems, limit the ability of the SIV model to replicate directly key interactions between HIV and the human immune system. Development of an effective HIV vaccine will require a greater understanding of how human immune responses succeed or fail to control HIV.

The current study was designed to test the humanized BLT mouse, a model created by transplanting human bone marrow stem cells, along with other human tissue, into mice lacking a functioning immune system. Andrew Tager, MD, a co-author of the report and director of the MGH Humanized Mouse Program, explains, "Multiple researchers have contributed to dramatic improvements in the ability of humanized mice to model human diseases. Earlier studies with BLT mice performed at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, the MGH and elsewhere have demonstrated that this particular humanized mouse model reproduces many aspects of the human immune response."

Timothy Dudek, PhD, of the Ragon Institute, lead author of the current study, adds, "Unlike normal mice, these humanized mice can be infected with HIV. But there has been little evidence regarding whether they reproduce the interaction between HIV and the human immune system, particularly the development of specific immune responses that exert control over HIV by targeting critical regions of the virus."

Tager's team at the MGH Center for Immunology and Inflammatory Diseases created groups of humanized BLT mice using cells and tissues from human donors with different alleles, or versions, of the immune system's HLA molecules, which flag infected cells for destruction by CD8 T cells. Particular HLA alleles, such as HLA-B57, are more common in individuals naturally able to control HIV, and some of the mice generated by Tager's group expressed this important protective allele.

Six weeks after the mice had been infected with HIV, the researchers found that the virus was rapidly evolving in regions known to be targeted by CD8 T cells. Their observation indicated that not only were the humanized mouse immune systems responding to HIV but also that the virus was mutating to avoid those responses in a manner similar to what is seen in humans. In mice expressing the protective HLA-B57 allele, just as in human patients who control viral levels, CD8 responses were directed against an essential region of the virus, preventing viral mutation and allowing the animals to more effectively contain HIV.

"We now know that these mice appear to replicate the specificity of the human cellular response to HIV and that the virus is attempting to evade these responses just as it does in humans," says Allen, an associate professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. "We are currently studying whether we can induce human HIV-specific immune responses in these animals by vaccination, which would provide a rapid, cost-effective model to test the ability of different vaccine approaches to control or even block HIV infection. If we can do this, we'll have a very powerful new tool to accelerate HIV vaccine development, one that also may be useful against other pathogens."

Tager is an assistant professor of Medicine and Dudek a research fellow in Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Additional co-authors are Daniel No, Lena Fadda, Priyasma Bhoumik, Christian Boutwell, Karen Power, Adrianne Gladden, Laura Battis, Elizabeth Mellors, and Marcus Altfeld of the Ragon Institute; Edward Seung, Vladimir Vrbanac, Trevor Tivey and Andrew Luster, MGH Center for Immunology and Inflammatory Diseases; and Xiaojiang Gao, National Cancer Institute. The study was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Ragon Institute, the Harvard University Center for AIDS Research and the National Cancer Institute.

Kansas Republicans war over "Ryan plan" style tax cuts

WICHITA, Kansas (Reuters) - Fiscal conservatives in Kansas have turned their state into a laboratory to test reforms similar to the "Ryan plan" for massive tax cuts at the national level -- and the result has been a Republican civil war.

Backers of recent state tax cuts argue they will create jobs and boost the economy to partially offset lost revenue, with budget cuts solving the remaining shortfall. The tax cuts go into effect in January, and the Kansas Legislative Research Department calculates the lost revenue will amount to the equivalent of 36 percent of the state budget within five years.

Republican Governor Sam Brownback has described the reforms as a "real live experiment" that proponents want to see implemented at the national level.

Critics say there are few specifics on spending cuts. The same criticism is leveled by opponents of U.S. House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan's "Path to Prosperity," which President Barack Obama has called "thinly veiled social Darwinism," arguing its spending cuts are vague and will hurt everything from education to low-income families and highways.

The "Ryan plan" maintains that cutting taxes and broadening the tax base is "pro-growth reform" that will "promote innovation and sustained job creation in the private sector."

Moderate Republicans, who control the Kansas state Senate with Democratic help, argue that a tax-cut-fueled boom is a pipe dream and lost tax revenue will devastate schools, roads and basic services for the poor, as well as lead to the release of convicted felons.

"The tax cuts will do huge damage to Kansas over the next few years," said Republican state Senate Vice President John Vratil, who is retiring and refers to conservatives as "ultra right wingers." "It's pretty clear that unless something changes we will see dramatic cuts to public services like education."

Internecine warfare has led to a slew of challenges against moderate Kansas Republicans in the August 7 primary.

"Someone has to get the nation's fiscal house in order," said Mike O'Neal, Kansas House speaker. "The people who can get that done are conservatives."

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who is running neck and neck with President Barack Obama in opinion polls, supports the Ryan plan, which Democrats worry will destroy the social safety net.

Moderate Republicans worry Kansas is a harbinger of problems for the party nationally. They fear conservatives could push the party too far right if they hold the House, take the Senate and win the presidency this November.

"The question is, Can moderates reassert control of the party?" said University of Kansas politics professor Burdett Loomis. "Right now it appears the greater risk for the Republican Party is having its dreams come true in November."

BROWNBACK'S AGGRESSIVE AGENDA

Kansas has not voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since 1964. Registered Republicans vastly outnumber Democrats, but moderate Republican Kansans sometimes elect centrist Democrats such as former Governor Kathleen Sebelius.

The two parties in this largely rural state of 2.8 million have often functioned as three, with moderate Republicans forming an informal majority with Democrats.

Conservatives triumphed in 2010, winning the governorship and enough seats in the state House to outnumber moderate Republicans and Democrats. The state Senate was unaffected since it was elected in 2008 for a four-year term.

Long known as a social conservative, Brownback and his allies have focused more on fiscal issues, though the governor has signed into law several pieces of anti-abortion legislation.

"Brownback has been an extremely aggressive governor," said Edward Flentje, a Wichita State University politics professor. "No governor in recent times has taken on as many issues."

Those issues included voter ID legislation and turning over management of Medicaid in Kansas to three private companies. Relations quickly soured among Senate Republicans.

"We started using words like 'war' and 'mutiny' with our moderate leadership," said Ty Masterson, a conservative senator.

The tax cut bill brought things to a head, with conservatives arguing a new approach was needed because spending increases were unsustainable. The state budget grew 46 percent from fiscal year 2003 to 2012, while the population grew just 7 percent from 2000 to 2011.

The law, passed in May amid much acrimony, removed the top state income-tax bracket and lowered the remaining two, as well as making some businesses, including limited liability companies, tax exempt.

"Whatever you want to call it, it's the Ryan plan," said University of Kansas's Loomis. "This is based on pure faith in supply side economics."

According to a Kansas Legislative Research Department analysis, in fiscal year 2018 (beginning July 2017) the revenue loss would exceed $900 million and the cumulative hole from previous years in the projected $6.8 billion state budget would amount to nearly $2.5 billion. A June 14 Moody's Investors Service report said tax revenue losses would be "dramatic," adding that "inaction or the use of unsustainable budgetary measures to offset the loss could lead to a (rating) downgrade."

Moderate Republicans say dramatic revenue losses will hit public services hard, especially public education, which accounts for 62.4 percent of the current annual state budget.

"Unless jobs come flooding to Kansas, the first place to cut is education," said Republican Senate majority whip Jean Schodorf, who faces a conservative primary challenger. "We have to hope this (tax cut package) is a success, or a lot of people are going to get hurt. This is barebones, Libertarian government."

Derrick Sontag, state director of conservative group Americans for Prosperity, argues that because Kansas law prohibits deficits, incremental spending cuts will offset the shortfall, which conservatives say will be minimal.

"Tax reform will result in increased economic activity that will lead to increased tax revenue," Sontag said. "Kansas is close to being a model state for the free market, limited government approach."

KOCH'S HOME TURF

Even before the tax fight, conservatives planned to target moderates, whom they call "liberals," in the state Senate. All 40 seats are up for election in November.

The conservative challengers include several chief executives - including Gary Mason, CEO of a Wichita-based environmental services company, and David Harvey, head of a commercial real estate firm in Overland Park - arguing, much like Mitt Romney, that their business experience will benefit the state economy and create jobs.

Moderates, who refer to themselves as "traditional Republicans," acknowledge they face a tough fight.

Some also complain about the influence of conservative oil and gas billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch, whose Koch Industries is based in Wichita and employs more than 2,900 people in Kansas. Together, the company and Koch family members contributed $60,000 to Brownback's campaign in 2009 and 2010, campaign filings show.

"The influence of Koch Industries is felt daily in this state," said Republican Senate President Steve Morris, who faces a conservative primary challenger. "The Senate is the last bastion of traditional Republicanism here. We're fighting for the heart and soul of Kansas."

Morris and other moderate Republicans claim, for instance, that the powerful Kansas Chamber of Commerce - which has endorsed and is backing a number of conservative primary challengers - is a "puppet" of the Koch brothers. The chamber has rejected that claim outright.

Koch Industries spokeswoman Melissa Cohlmia said the Kochs are "convenient targets" for opponents of their free-market philosophy, and Kansas voters will decide their own path.

"With regard to Governor Brownback, we applaud his efforts to reduce public debt and spur job creation," she said by email.

Moderates like Morris fear conservatives generally could seriously damage the Republican Party.

"Conservatives here in Kansas have already over-reached," he said. "At the national level the party has to be careful it does not over-reach by cutting too many public services."

"People may wake up and punish the party."

Restaurant review: Sasa ? life, from the ground up.

It?s been awhile since we?ve been out, so we took advantage of my recent birthday as an excuse to offload C for a couple hours and go enjoy a dinner. So off we went, once again back to Shaker Square, this time to Sasa, a Japanese Izakaya?Asian bistro. Izakaya?refers to a type of drinking establishment that serves food as well, a casual bar/pub type place. Sasa bills itself as serving ?tapas-style dishes,? and we certainly found that to be the case. We also came on a Monday, which meant all-night happy-hour pricing, so $5 per small dish (the menu is set up with small, medium, and large dishes).

Since the size of the plates was smaller, we had many different things, so I won?t describe each one in detail ? I?ll just let the pictures do the talking. Suffice it to say, the food was all outstanding, though in our case, very seafood-heavy (being Japanese; there are also many non-seafood menu items if fish isn?t your thing). Part of the reason we came here was I?ve been craving sushi. I?m not totally sure why, because I?ve only had it a couple times?and I tend to like my food cooked, but nevertheless, I wanted some, and Sasa didn?t disappoint with the Spicy Dynamite, a combo of salmon, tuna, and whitefish, wrapped?and deep-fried just long enough to crisp up the outside, but still leave the inside raw. Quite amazing.

Lobster and shrimp harumaki ? egg-roll style dish, with a nice, sweet, dipping sauce.

SASA fries ? crispy outside, soft inside, sprinkled with two types of seaweed, and alongside a Japanese-style barbecue sauce, and a creamy, spicy dip.

Tuna sashimi

Fried oyster served in their shells atop napa cabbage slaw.

Shrimp yakiudon ? served over udon noodles and vegetables in a spicy peanut sauce.

The Spicy Dynamite roll.

And for dessert, a plum-wine poached pear.

Japanese cream soda, with a marble in the bottle.

The verdict: Sasa gets six stars out of seven. The food was all excellent, the patio seating is nice, service was fine, and pricing was reasonable ? for seven different dishes and a drink, the bill was about $80. Of course, you don?t have to eat seven things, but it all sounds good, so you may have a hard time narrowing it down?

Visual Branding Keys To Make Your Business Memorable

Have you ever asked yourself why a competitor?s business gets more attention than yours? The answer just may have to do with the elements that go into how memorable the business is. And that has to do with branding.

But exactly what is branding, anyway? Think of branding as predefining what a company is all about in the minds of its clients. Good branding differentiates your products and services in a positive way that really sticks in the minds of potential customers.

Let?s say you are getting ready to run errands on a busy Saturday morning, thinking about the groceries that need to be bought, the dry cleaning that needs to be picked up, and the packages that must get to the post office before noon. The trip to the post office reminds you that your favorite aunt?s birthday is next Wednesday. You need to add buying and mailing a birthday card to your list of things to do. Without a moment?s hesitation, you know exactly where you will buy the card: the local Hallmark store. Why did you think Hallmark?

The answer to that question has everything to do with Hallmark?s branding and two key elements of that branding are:

* An attractive, easy to read, and memorable logo;
* and a great tag line.

Assuming your own product is fabulous, it all comes down to image. Graphic design can play a huge part in that image. But what are some key things to consider?

A great logo is key.

You have given a great deal of attention to your company name and believe it speaks to who you are and what you do. Great! Now you need to wrap a graphic image around that name to carve out a prime piece of real estate in your target customer?s mind. That is exactly what a great logo can do.

Keep in mind that a powerful logo:

* has a strong, balanced image with no little extras that clutter its look;

* is distinctive and bold in design, making it easy to see at a glance;

* has graphic imagery that looks appropriate for your business;

* works well with your company name;

* is done in an easy to read font;

* communicates your business clearly; and

* looks good in black and white, as well as in color.

Hallmark?s memorable crown logo is one of the reasons that Hallmark comes to mind so quickly when you need to buy a greeting card. It is simple, bold, looks good in either color or black and white, and bespeaks the quality required for something to be stamped with a hallmark, so it works well with the company name. While the image might not have communicated the nature of the business when it was first created, it certainly does now!

A distinctive tag line is key.

A tag line is a 3 to 7 word phrase that accompanies your logo. It expresses your company?s most important benefits and/or what you want your customers to remember about working with you. Think of it as the words you want to linger in your target customer?s mind about you and what you have to offer.

Great tag lines appear to be effortlessly created because they just seem to flow. In fact, creating and refining one takes time, just like designing a great logo. The benefits of taking the time to craft a great tag line lie with the tag line?s stickiness. Great tag lines stick in your memory.

The Hallmark tag line, ?When you care enough to send the very best,? appeals to the human desire to be viewed as having good taste and an appreciation for luxury. If greeting cards are a commodity, then Hallmark has found a way to differentiate itself as the choice for quality.

The Hallmark company was founded by J. C. Hall, so the name Hallmark was a natural. It was also brilliant from a marketing standpoint. Hallmarks have been used for centuries as a stamp to denote quality, purity, and genuineness. Could there be a better way to attach the image of quality to a product? The tag line capitalizes on that image well with words that stick in the mind and exemplify good taste.

Creating a great logo and distinctive tag line are critical in creating a brand that provides the perfect image for your company and great ones just might be memorable enough to give your company the beach front property in the minds of your customers that leaves them thinking only of you.

Mobile app store WAC gets whacked: sells assets, is absorbed into GSMA

After struggling for over two years to get its mobile app store off the ground, the Wholesale Applications Community has decided to give up on its efforts, selling its assets and calling it a day. Established by the likes of Verizon, AT&T and Vodafone, the GSMA has agreed to continue offering the service to its membership, although its relatively recent payments system API (an asset that's now being sold off) might prove to be one of the last additions.
